Restricted barber starts are listed for November 3 and December 1, 2026. Check the evening days before signing, since the course page and catalog disagree about Monday attendance.

Read the Barbers Board FAQ before picking a course. It lists 900 hours for the standard barber route and 600 educational hours for restricted barber applicants.
Complete the hours in your enrollment agreement and have the school document completion. DBPR allows a school to certify competence for the full barber exam after at least 600 hours; that decision is made by the school.

The BAR 1 checklist requires examination applicants to be at least 16. Submit the signed education verification and required fee, then follow the Department's authorization process.

Schedule the written test
After approval, DBPR guidance directs you to Pearson VUE to schedule the written barber examination. Ask the campus how it reports completion and what exam preparation your course includes.
Barber employment and pay around Jacksonville
The May 2025 BLS OEWS estimates counted 110 barbers in the Jacksonville, FL metro area (SOC 39-5011). Median wages were $27.82 per hour and $57,860 annually. Those figures describe employees across the occupation, rather than pay promised to someone finishing barber school.
BLS survey definitions exclude self-employed people, so the count does not include every independent barber or shop owner. Use it as a wage reference when reviewing an employee position. Ask about commission rules, tips, tools, chair costs and the number of paid hours. Compare a written offer with your own training and travel costs.
Barber tuition, kits and possible assistance
KCK publishes $14,700 tuition and a $16,725 total for its full barber program. Its restricted course lists $7,350 tuition and a $9,325 total. Community Barber School posts $9,000 tuition plus a $75 enrollment fee. These are published school figures checked October 27, 2026; ask for kits, licensing and any extra-hour charges in writing.
AAC financial aid describes FAFSA applications, Pell Grants for eligible students and VA benefits. Check the exact course in the GI Bill Comparison Tool if you plan to use military education benefits. Contact CareerSource Northeast Florida about WIOA before assuming barber training is covered; awards require an eligible student, an approved training choice and available funds. If a shop offers tuition reimbursement, ask for its payment and work-commitment terms in writing.
What is the difference between full and restricted barber training?
Florida lists a 900-hour standard barber route and a 600-hour restricted route in its licensing FAQ. The services taught also differ. Shear Finesse says its restricted barbering curriculum excludes chemical services, while its full course includes them. Decide whether you want to perform color or other chemical work, then ask the school to identify the license your course prepares you to seek.
Why do some schools still list 1,200-hour barber programs?
A school can publish a program longer than the state's standard 900-hour route. KCK lists 1,200 hours, while FSCJ lists 900. The BAR 1 checklist also describes school-certified eligibility after at least 600 hours for the full barber exam. Early eligibility depends on the school's competence determination; ask how it affects your contract, tuition and graduation requirements.
Are there night barber classes in Jacksonville?
Fade 'Em All publishes a part-time night track lasting 10 months. Classes run Tuesday through Friday, 5 to 9 p.m., with Saturday sessions from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. KCK admissions also lists day and evening options. Get the full weekly schedule, including clinic and weekend requirements, before arranging shifts at work.
Can I train through an apprenticeship instead of barber school?
For a first Florida license by examination, section 476.114 identifies training at a licensed barbering school, a public school barbering program or a government-operated program. Do not assume shop employment replaces that education. The Board FAQ also says apprentice licenses from another state are not eligible for endorsement. A school's use of the term master barber does not change the published state application route.
Does FSCJ offer a public barber training option?
Yes. FSCJ's Barbering Career Certificate lists 900 contact hours and approximately eight months of study. Its June 2026 announcement identifies the existing North Campus lab and a new dedicated lab at Kent Campus. Contact the department to confirm the campus, next available start and meeting hours for your cohort, since a campus opening does not establish the schedule of every class.
