How to become a Florida nail specialist

  1. 1

    Choose the right course

A nail specialty course focuses on nail services; full specialty combines nails and facials. Review the Board of Cosmetology definitions before choosing the broader program.

  2. 2

    Verify your school choice

Find the campus and nail program in the CIE school search. Public FCTC appears in the Florida DOE district college directory; check its next adult nail class separately.

  3. 3

    Finish the required hours

Complete at least 180 school hours in a Florida nail program. The DBPR nail checklist also requires an initial HIV/AIDS course lasting at least four hours and completed within two years before application.

  4. 4

    File your registration application

Submit COSMO 1, your training completion certificate, the school’s Certification of Eligibility and the required fee. Use the official application form to check which sections the school must sign.

  5. 5

    Confirm your permission to practice

Check registration status before accepting independent client work. The DBPR specialty FAQ allows a limited pending-application exception with an active registered specialist physically present, required salon documents and no unresolved application deficiencies.

Jacksonville nail technician employment and median pay

For May 2025, BLS estimated 590 manicurist and pedicurist jobs in the Jacksonville, FL metro area. The median hourly wage was $18.46, and the annual median was $38,390 for occupation 39-5092. These are the figures in the BLS metro OEWS table.

The estimates cover workers at different experience levels. They do not describe an entry-level offer. BLS also excludes self-employment from this survey, so the data cannot tell you a nail business owner’s profit. When you review a salon position, ask how service commissions, tips, supplies and scheduled hours affect take-home pay.

What nail school costs around Jacksonville

American Academy’s 2026 catalog lists $4,750 tuition and $6,200 total for Nail Technology. Parisian lists $2,848.05 tuition and $3,135 total for 180 hours on its program page. FCTC’s 2026-27 cost sheet shows $439.20 tuition, $957.60 with lab and listed fees, and $1,824.93 overall. Compare each fee category before choosing a payment plan.

Pell through FAFSA depends on the course and your eligibility. KCK admissions lists Full Specialist for qualifying financial aid applicants. FCTC says its nail course is not federal aid eligible. For GI Bill use, verify the program with the VA tool. Ask CareerSource NEFL, your local American Job Center network, to check WIOA eligibility and course coverage before you register. For any employer-paid offer, request written service and repayment conditions.

Ask these questions before paying for nail classes

  • Does this course lead to nail or full specialist registration?
  • What are the confirmed start and end dates for the next class?
  • How much practice involves live clients?
  • Are a nail kit, books and an electric file included?
  • What happens if you miss a clinical day?
  • Does financial aid cover this specific course?
  • Will you receive a complete price and refund policy in writing?

How to check a school

Common questions

How many hours does Florida require for nail tech registration?

The state minimum is 180 school hours in a Florida nail program, according to DBPR. Local programs may require more. American Academy of Cosmetology lists 240 hours for Nail Technology. Ask the school to explain its full attendance requirement and how it documents the hours used for your registration application.

Is there a state nail technician exam in Florida?

You do not take the Florida cosmetology examination to obtain a nail specialist registration. The state nail application page instead calls for training and eligibility documents. Your school can still require tests and practical evaluations before issuing its completion certificate. Ask for those graduation standards while reviewing the enrollment agreement.

Can you learn both nails and skin care in one program?

Yes. Full specialty combines the services allowed by nail specialist and facial specialist registrations, as explained by DBPR. American Academy’s Full Specialist course publishes 600 hours covering both areas. Check the combined course’s price and weekly schedule instead of assuming it has the same length as a nail-only course.

Are there short public-college nail classes nearby?

First Coast Technical College lists a 180-hour, six-week day program at its St. Augustine main campus. Its 2026-27 calendar schedules the next nail cohort for May 10-June 23, 2027. The program is open to adult applicants and is marked ineligible for federal financial aid; check registration deadlines with the college.

Do nail schools offer night or part-time schedules?

Several schools publish those options. American Academy offers full-time or part-time day and night classes. Shear Finesse lists evening full specialist classes with Saturday attendance. Ask for the entire weekly calendar, including practical sessions and makeup days, so you can judge whether the schedule fits your job and home responsibilities.
